Man oh Man
Well I went to Wainuiomata today where the Duathlon is. I had a 30min run scheduled so decided to do it over there to get familiar with at least 1 stage of the course. However looking up on ‘Map my Run’ it is 3.6km and driving it due to round abouts is 3.7km. So NOT a 3km run at all.
I did not like it as I tend to get up early and do my training and it was 11am. Also there were roadworks on the footpath so I had to cross the road and then come back again to continue on the route. The driveways are not good for the legs either as they are sloped so the right leg is always running higher and they dip into the driveway. This meant you felt like you were constantly stepping down and then up again.
The weather was cool enough especially for that time of day but had Gusty Northerlies at 19 kph. So I noticed in places the wind. It was funny starting to run while people are watching but I went anyway. I got to where the 1.5km mark would be and it took me 10mins (don’t know the seconds) so that is good. At this point I was exhausted, I continued and got in at 27mins. I suppose for a new route, winds and also the extra 600m it wasn’t too bad. I got to the end and saw the kids waiting and Isaiah started to come towards me and I tell you I nearly cried so I hope they bring tissues on Sunday as I am likely to be a bawling mess. lol. Exhaustion and reaching a goal like this, I think I deserve to shed a tear of 100.
My goal was 30minutes so I still ok with this although I hadn’t ran and biked prior and I was the only person yet again.
My aim is to finish and even though I have goals they are superficial being my first race.
We got home and Isaiah went to his calendar and came out and said “Daddy there are three sleeps till Mummy’s race” So I have one little fan. Although he thinks I have to win, it has been hard getting him to understand the aim is to finish not win (well not at this stage anyway).
Checked the temperature for Sunday and it is to be ‘sunny’ yay. The race is at 8.00am though so should miss the hard sun. I have also checked the details for Sunday and I am in Wave 15 so leaving at 8.15am. There are 31 people in my wave with me being one of them.
It is so real now.

Nicely done! I cry when I seem Mums with their young children running toward the finish line with them. Don’t forget, if you’re doing this, then you’ll be much slower, you can only go the pace the kids go at that point.
Also, they waves don’t tend to start on time. Well the first one anyway. In my experience of a Duathlon, once they get started they do go 1 minute apart, but the first may not be right on 8am.
You’ll get carried away with the excitement on the day, that’ll probably make up for the extra people you’re starting off with, and they’ll all be at different levels so you wont be clambering over each other
